Sechelt Inlet - family paddling
paradise It's hard to imagine a more magical, safe and exciting destination
for family adventure than our very own Sechelt Inlet. Whether you are
planning a short afternoon family getaway or an extended overnight adventure,
Sechelt Inlet has it all - fantastic scenery, abundant wildlife, easily
accessible wilderness beach parks and surprises around every corner. The
spectacular mountain ranges surrounding the Inlet rival the best coastal
scenery to be found anywhere in BC. Tall green snow-capped mountains tumble
majestically into the clear blue ocean waters that make up the Inlet system.
The luxuriant green shoreline vegetation reflects off the generally calm,
tranquil waters creating a lush, tantalizing visual feast.
Wilderness beach parks dot the shoreline
providing excellent playgrounds for children and adults alike. The kids
will spend hours hunting for intertidal life under rocks and in tidal
pools, while parents can join in this typically west coast form of recreation,
or steal a well deserved rest on these private beach retreats. Such luxuries
as year-round water, tent pads, outhouses, fire rings and picnic tables
make these secluded wilderness campsites ideal for extended family outings.
With no road or trail access, these beach parks offer a unique brand of
coastal serenity seldom found so close to home.
As one explores the countless bays and coves
along the Inlet shore, startled blue heron squawk noisily as they flap
their huge wings in sudden flight. Bald eagles perch on the highest limbs
of weathered, craggy trees keeping watch over their chosen territory or
soar high overhead in search of food. A dozen varieties of waterfowl swim,
dive and glide along the shallow shore waters. Curious seals appear out
of nowhere and accompany paddlers in quiet exploration.
 The
shore is always close by, allowing less experienced paddlers to enjoy
its wilderness appeal without over-extending their abilities, and the
longest crossing is only about 1.5 km. There is virtually no tidal current
to worry about either. These ideal conditions make Inlet paddling perfect
for families of all ages and experience. Beach parks are spaced about
an hour's paddling time apart, and many other undeveloped beaches along
the way make shore access easy. Ocean kayaks and canoes, as well as paddling
gear, maps and other resources, are available year-round from Pedals and
Paddles, at Tillicum Bay Marina on the east shore of Sechelt Inlet.
